Big Al's Aquarium Supercentres and Pet City - Kids learn about ...

A quietly bubbling aquarium adds a ?tropical island? touch to any room and the playful behaviours and interactions of your fish can be relaxing and cause excitement all at the same time.

A guaranteed way to get the kids excited about fish keeping is to stock the tank with livebearers such as the Platy, Guppy or Molly. Any teacher who wishes to introduce an aquarium to the classroom will have great success with these fish. The eggs of a livebearer are fertilized inside the body and the offspring develop there until they are ready to be born. With a few protective barriers in place, your kids will have the opportunity to watch baby fish or ?fry? being born and subsequently grow to adulthood.

The best live bearing fish for a freshwater community tank are Platies and Guppies. Mollies are good too, but they require brackish or slightly salted water. The females of any one of these species will spawn readily in captivity. Your trusted aquarium professionals know the difference between male and female fish and will be able to mix up the group and even provide you with one or two pregnant specimens. Keeping one male with at least three females is a good idea. The amount of male harassment will be spread out over several females and each female will be less stressed as a result.

As your pregnant female gets closer to spawning the trick is to keep her inside a floating enclosure just before she gives birth so that as many of the fry can be saved as possible. Unfortunately adult fish do not possess any protective parenting skills and will eat their own offspring as quick as a flash. Even if one fry can be saved and nurtured in a netted enclosure, your kids will marvel at how fast the little fish grows. Before you know it the day will come when your adopted fish will join the rest of the school to begin the life cycle all over again.
